Recent technical progress in the area of office imaging equipment has made possible remarkable performance advancements in plain paper copiers, laser printers and facsimile machines. Improved properties of print imaging, speed, maintenance-free operation and low cost are especially required in today's demanding business environment. Critical to these imaging devices are static dissipative charger and developer rollers.+ ~" s0 X+ z. Y3 b# A/ j
0 s f( N, X% R) D+ r* \( _; |Charger rollers, responsible for depositing a uniform electrical charge across the surface of the photoconductive drum, must do so consistently across the surface of the roll to prevent copy shadow or type recurrence./ V3 u3 q/ U5 J5 _. {. n: i

Developer rollers, responsible for transferring toner from the toner cartridge to the paper, must also have extremely consistent static electrical properties throughout the roller in order to achieve the highest possible print quality.

/ _, D. t9 u ]$ ^9 L1 AHistorically, manufacturers of charger and developer rollers have had two design venues from which to choose. The first is a multilayer design concept where a conductive roll is surface treated with a static dissipative agent. Disadvantages with this design approach are with the inherent tendency for the agent to wear off with time and increased costs associated with the manufacture of multilayer rolls. The second is via addition of either conductive or nonconductive fillers (dependent upon the electrical properties of the base elastomer) into the final roller compound as method to achieve the desired static dissipative properties. The main concern with this type design approach is with inconsistencies in filler dispersion resulting in widely varying electrical properties across the surface of the roll.4 W% a( m7 v o6 H7 b6 D

Hydrin epichlorohydrin (ECO) elastomers that contain ethylene-oxide (EO) are naturally static dissipative and offer both technical and costs advantages in not requiring the addition of specialized fillers or coatings to achieve desired static dissipative properties. The electrical properties of Hydrin (ECO) are made more and more static dissipative by increasing its ethylene-oxide content. The wide variety of grades currently offered by the Hydrin ECO elastomer product line covers the full range of the static dissipative spectrum utilized by the imaging roller industry today.

Information included in this bulletin provides details concerning the static dissipative properties of Hydrin epichlorohydrin products in both raw polymer gum stock and filled compounds.
