6 z" |( Z5 j$ L$ F9 j" kEVALUATION OF COMPOSTABILITY OF PACKAGING IN LINE WITH EN 13432
8 {3 ?4 p+ J! C4 W. ?# S7 L+ dGENERAL REMARKS 8 u+ J% {& Q# m* _: M7 w
! o% \$ H; z0 {/ U$ u% q% L& cThe proposed tests adhere strictly to the European norm EN 13432 on compostability of packaging materials, American standards ASTM D6400 and ASTM D6868 on compostability of plastics and coated paper and the international norm ISO 17088 on compostability of plastics. All norms are very similar to one another.1 R* z. F3 y& a1 x: [

• For OK Compost certification (Belgium-France), DIN-Certco (Germany-UK), BPI (USA-Canada), JPBA (Japan) or ABA (Australia), it is necessary to perform the tests under high-quality (GLP-like, Good Laboratory Practices) conditions in an approved and recognized laboratory.( j z1 k# O0 F1 K: O! w
; N$ ]7 a$ O( n7 x- V8 q• Before running the complete test program for certification, it can be useful to start first with some preliminary screening tests which can be executed under easier (and hence cheaper) conditions of quality control and which will already give a good idea on the chances on success for the ultimate test(s) under high-quality conditions. Furthermore, as materials are certified until a certain thickness only, it can in some case also be better to test several thicknesses first after which the maximum thickness with the highest chance on success can be selected. 3 S# Q3 z7 r) {, x) A
+ Y; _) S8 J5 d1 ^. n2 M$ s* g- K/ F5 A• Another possibility is to follow a step-by-step approach and to start with a first step in the complete testing strategy only, e.g. the biodegradation test under controlled composting conditions. In case of positive results, it can still be decided whether to continue with the rest of the program. This report can later still be used as part in the dossier to obtain the compostability labels. ( m- y4 v1 d) C( D: c R• Assuming that 1 sample is subjected to the complete test program for compostability certification and a sufficiently high biodegradation percentage is obtained after 45 days in the controlled composting test, the price can be summarized as follows. If more components have to be tested or tests have to be longer, the price will of course be different:6 h. y0 ~+ ~; m7 D( A: J4 d
