" E5 j7 g* J! o- A I get a kick out of eating supper with my mother,http://vatsalya.dzone.co.in/download/school/vendors.html, Josephine,http://lebaneserealestateweb.com/photos/gcndl.html, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center in The Plains because the aides are so used to waiting on the residents that they always open my carton of milk for me. (So far, I've been lucky no one has tried to put a bib,http://ambitiontel.com/fonts/moryump.html, aka clothing protector,http://www.jobs.dzonehub.com/HelloWorld/tcanb.html, on me.)
! D& v8 ~/ Y3 K& G. I/ _In this day of inexpensive electronics,http://michelaassaf.com/greybox/localwe.html, many people have an extra TV set or CD player or cassette player that is in very good condition but which is sitting unused in a closet. Many people also have videotapes, CDs,http://hatemcpa.com/PopCalendar2005/CSS/ckinclude.html, and cassettes they haven't played for two years. You can try to sell these things at a yard sale, but if that doesn't work, call the activities director at an area nursing home and see if you can donate these items for the use of the residents.
" G) l+ p+ ^0 Z y6 xWith her portrayal as a Mammy in "Gone with the Wind,http://acewelcome.com/mepreview.html," Hattie McDaniel became the first African American woman ever to win an Oscar. This 1940 win was a big step for blacks in the United States, but Ms. McDaniel was criticized because in her movies her roles consisted of maids and Mammies. Of course,http://hahlf.com/img/chang.html, those were almost the only roles offered to black women back then. As Ms. McDaniel pointed out, "It's better to get $7,000 a week for playing a servant than $7 a week for being one." In her private life, she did much to help other African Americans. During World War II, she organized entertainment for black troops. In 1945, she filed a lawsuit to stop segregated neighborhoods in Los Angeles her lawsuit went all the way to the Supreme Court. She won, she kept her house in a formerly all white neighborhood,http://iacva-me.com/pdf/contactus.html, and she set a legal precedent against segregated neighborhoods that helped other African Americans to get housing in neighborhoods of their choice.
( `0 }( F4 u5 [$ F: B3 y9 w l0 Y9 VAfter Eugene Zimmerman became a famous 19th century cartoonist,http://senecalanes.com/Install/Module/pau.html, some people mistakenly thought that they had known him in his youth. For example,http://laposta-beirut.com/platdujour/my_documents/etestore.html, a Civil War veteran told him that he had seen him as a child drawing pictures on the sidewalk with chalk, and that he had known then that he would grow up to be famous. Mr. Zimmerman knew that the veteran's recollection was inaccurate and that he must have seen another child drawing pictures, but he did not tell the veteran. Mr. Zimmerman writes in his autobiography, "I never contradict an admirer when he recalls events in my early life. It is tragic to shatter romances that have been cherished for years, so I let it go at that."
* ^0 ^" |: ?9 G8 ] M' XIra Dutton, who wished to be called Brother Joseph despite not being a member of any order of Catholics, aided Father Damien in his service to the lepers at Molokai. Early in his life, Mr. Dutton had been an alcoholic, and after recovering he felt that he had wasted part of his life and wished to make amends. He converted to Catholicism,http://voting.dzonehub.com/logos/vorte.html, and in a convent library, he read about Father Damien. Mr. Dutton went to Molokai, and after Father Damien died, Mr. Dutton continued to care for the lepers. A layman once asked Mr. Dutton why he wished to be called Brother Joseph. He replied, "Because I want to be a brother to everybody."1 s) g6 \1 N! }4 k# [
Nancy "Kati" Garner became the first woman to graduate from the United States Navy Diving School,http://lpgproducts.dzonehub.com/img/tgosho.html, SCUBA, in 1973. This school is definitely physically and mentally rigorous, and most people don't make it. Although she was the first woman to graduate, she discovered that the men she was training with wanted her to graduate from the school. At one point in the school, the trainees were required to jog faster than Ms. Garner was used to, so the men helped her get through the jogging. Ms. Garner says,http://laposta-beirut.com/platdujour/my_documents/etecat.html, "They would help me out by putting their arms around me and breeze me along."
9 l: `" ]8 ~, j& T) U+ ?After 11 year old baseball fan Johnny Sylvester became ill with a serious bone disease, his father arranged for some players on the teams in the 1926 World Series the New York Yankees and the St. Louis Cardinals to send him some autographed baseballs. Babe Ruth's baseball came with message: "I'll hit a home run for you in Wednesday's game." Babe kept his promise. Johnny never forgot that day, and 21 years later, when Babe Ruth was dying of cancer, Johnny visited him and cheered him up.9 I" ^. L) S& y: ]) |$ z4 y" l. Z: a
As a young man,http://madelebanon.com/NewEn/greybox/hristmas.html, African American artist Henry Ossawa Tanner taught at Clark University in Atlanta, Ga. A friend of the family took an interest in Mr. Tanner and his works of art and held an exhibition of his paintings. Unfortunately, none of the paintings were purchased by the people who attended the exhibition. Therefore, the friend bought every painting. This raised enough money for Mr. Tanner to go to Paris and study painting at the Academie Julien. He learned partly out of necessity, since his parents were alcoholics, and when they were on long drunks, the refrigerator stayed empty. Frequently, Mr. Paulsen returned from the woods with a grouse or rabbit that had been hunted out of season. He is thankful for all the game wardens who saw him, then looked the other way. Because she wanted Ms. Haywood to see how loved her book was it had been read to pieces she wrapped it and sent it as a gift to her.2 q# H9 m7 i2 ~ s& M
Coach George Halas of the Chicago Bears was a hard man to figure out. Brian Piccolo once bargained for months with him before getting a $500 raise, but after Mr. Piccolo got cancer and racked up thousands of dollars in hospital bills, Mr. Halas paid them.4 p; y0 ]+ k7 T/ P' c g( ^
Mother Teresa was not afraid to touch the poor. Her favorite form of greeting was to hold the other person's face in her hands, then to touch her forehead to the other person's forehead.
