Japanese chemical plant returns to normal after explosion

Japanese chemical specialist Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. has resumed business following the devastating explosion and fire at its Iwakuni-Ohtake works site.

3 M/ S. i) _  gA press release from the company stated that ‘Operations have resumed at the Arlen plant in the Ohtake area’. The Yamaguchi prefecture site was subject to a series of explosions and accompanying fire that killed one employee, whilst injuring several others and severely damaged surrounding buildings and homes.

1 A5 K- v3 ^8 j) wThe explosions occurred at Mitsui Chemicals resorcinol plant, where an adhesive agent used in tire construction is created, before spreading to the other areas of the site.

6 ^# ~( T6 r% ]0 M0 u$ I4 RThe announcement that the site is returning to normal, comes on the same day Mitsui established a joint venture with Sinopec to manufacture and distribute ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPT).

EPT is a widely used throughout the automotive industry, and this joint venture will see the companies contribute toward the building of the world’s largest and most advanced EPT plant
