ARPM Belt Technical Committee: Protecting U.S. based interest

Indianapolis, IN - In their constant pursuit of protecting United States belt standards globally, the Association for Rubber Products Manufacturers (ARPM) held one of several belt technical committee meetings recently in Litchfield Park, AZ, on April 8-9. Representing power transmission and conveyor belt interests, the ARPM technical committee was held in conjunction with the Mechanical Power Transmission Association‘s (MPTA) annual meeting. Members of five of the major U.S. belt manufacturing companies took part in providing input and guidance to ARPM’s International Technical Committee Coordinator, Jerry Lukavich. “Our recent meeting was in preparation for the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) belt technical committee meeting coming up in Berlin, Germany, in early November,” Lukavich said. “This year’s committee meeting was extremely productive. We successfully identified many issues and are now in the process of going through the proper steps to correct. “We also established that we have two priorities going forward to the November technical meeting in Germany. The first priority is to review U.S. standards and to make sure they are up to date. The standards that we continually review and refine are guides for the actual use of belt products. They are not how to build the products. “The second priority is to ensure the U.S. positions on the standard guidelines for the use of these products are presented and properly backed by the international committee at the ISO meetings. Since the U.S. is a major belt manufacturer, it is important that our products integrate globally and it is vital to protect our position internationally.” In almost all cases, there is an international standard that is completely or partly based on a U.S. standard, which is why the ARPM Belt Technical Committee works as the governance body to ensure that change and modifications are submitted to the international group. ARPM looks forward to accomplishing these goals.
