a look at the best and worst NFL uniforms( T, A2 k5 Y" U! f$ X/ _: M
BEREA, Ohio The Browns debut their new uniforms on the field Thursday night in an exhibition opener at FirstEnergy Stadium.
) d) D3 e! J; l5 nTo mark the occasion, my boss asked if I could assemble an NFL uniform power ranking. The request came by phone so I not sure if it was delivered with a straight face.0 w# O' s; W1 t9 n# z6 n9 N
Unlike my stylish beat partner. Mary Kay Cabot, I am to fashion what Bill Belichick is to fashion. If it were socially acceptable I would wear a hoody and shorts every day. The only reason my wardrobe has evolved since 1994 is because my wife occasionally trashes clothes from my closet when I not home.
+ g( _9 n. L/ T: l$ J# r: E: LSo to lend a whiff of legitimacy to the enterprise I enlisted the help of two titans in the industry, Kristy Eckert and Ryan Vesler.- k( H5 o9 v$ n/ C5 {1 d
Eckert is a former editor of Capital Style and former fashion columnist for the Columbus Dispatch. She now the chief communications officer at Flying Horse Farms, a Central Ohio camp serving children with serious illnesses and their families free of charge.+ U& X& ?6 U [4 e" \3 p, `
Vesler started HOMAGE in 2007 in the basement of his parents house after graduating in 2005 from Ohio University,http://skyworldexp.com/ExcelFiles/rafthow.html. He started HOMAGE as a way of communicating with people and as a means of telling stories. He serves as the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Creative Officer.! ~: ?/ Y+ V* t, j
All three of us rated NFL uniforms from best to worst,http://sabethabowl.com/Documentation/StarterKit/craftw.html. We tabulated the scores and ranked them 32 to 1,http://firstgrplb.com/Openings/bdevmain.html. The number next to our name on each team panel reflects the individual ranking.- N' U- g) w0 \% M; h
Spoiler alert: The folks in the South,http://partnersbowl.com/Documentation/StarterKit/kyrieir.html, particularly Florida,http://ghadakazan.com/upload/thumb/capboot.html, won be happy.# M3 {6 V( P6 H( t, H+ J
Tom Reed, Northeast Ohio Media Group
& W) q% f9 w! t; W. ]- J: sReed (32): The folks at Not to Wear could have a field day. No wonder Josh McCown had such poor year last season. Who can play football when your jersey number looks like an LED readout on an alarm clock? The logo is OK,http://michelaassaf.com/greybox/loadbanner.html, but Buccaneer flags on the helmets are too big. The uniform design is too busy. Just a disaster.
+ N4 @) a3 h% b; g, wEckert (30): Seriously, guys,http://www.jobs.dzonehub.com/HelloWorld/tcanb.html, you are pirates. With potential for a fierce uniform. Instead, you added a sweet splash of orange, a modern font and the kitchen sink? More is not more.
4 `' ]* _2 t+ w/ {Vesler (30): In addition to the weird stripe in the Bucs' helmets, I'm not feelin' the red/orange combo here.
5 s, H! z8 M U: \& BReed (28): I remain overwhelmingly ambivalent about Carolina uniforms. They spark no feeling one way or the other. Which, of course,http://vatjob.dzonehub.com/student_image/uslsuanw.html, is the problem.
$ {, \0 W9 ], L& n0 K7 IEckert (26) A few upgrades and these could be super sleek: Play up the black and silver while minimizing the blue, and lose the panther on the sleeve so there not a triple panther (helmet, sleeve, pants) down the side.
6 U" x0 _% V. A4 A) v' r" zVesler (28): By itself,http://lebanon-industry.com/banners/gold/generalta.html, it's fine, but in a state with UNC, Duke, and the Hornets,http://kouraniyat.com/highslide/graphics/eletetheme.html, they have the fourth best shade of blue with no chance of moving up.& J# B$ v* l; k! u
Reed (15): There an identity crisis here and not just because Chip Kelly is shipping out every big name on the roster. Are the Eagles wearing midnight green, kelly green or some other hue? It a decent logo and uniform design, but pick a color and stick with it, Eagles.& z1 V$ l2 d& m) t* w& S5 T- t
Eckert (17): I dig the helmet wings. I lose the eagles on the sleeves and let the helmet do the talking. (I actually never realized until this exercise how little I care for sleeve design. Numbers, OK. Stripes,http://lebaneserealestateweb.com/photos/ftshowy.html, even better. Anything else thanks.)
: f- k8 J% h) d# A1 x: b2 tVesler (20); Give me the shade of green from the Reggie White era any day, but their current midnight green isn't bad.
& M( C f1 v. ]/ t) PReed (21): The great Richard Sherman is easily outraged. Why not direct some of his venom toward the Nike designers who made the Seahawks look like a CFL outfit,http://diliptravel.com/css/sanders.html?, H( e( R: ?4 c) h3 R
Eckert (27): I appreciate the effort to be fresh. It just a little too much, with the stripes and the graphic designs and funky helmet. (The good news is, there a silver lining it neon green. Inventive infusion.)
) V. H ~" ~$ ~: L. E! W$ ^Vesler (2): These modernized unis with flashes of neon green make the 'Hawks seem extra speedy,http://anuvaakexports.com/image/garments/kids/ngepw.html, and give new meaning to the nickname,http://dzonehub.com/Courses_files/storei.html, "Beast Mode"!' U" O! ^9 o) G5 \
Reed (11): I will never forgive the organization for benching Pat the Patriot for the Flying Elvis helmet logo. But it hard to argue with success on the field since they made the swap. The blue, silver and white scheme works well. The red facemasks also are a nice touch.' {5 \ f4 k; A' m9 a K' v
Eckert (12): Impressive use of red, white and blue without looking elementary. Yes, I take the patriot off the sleeve, but this uniform is really good. And reality is reality: there nothing deflating about seeing Tom Brady inside it, either.9 ~) q! ?; |% ]( M( T
Vesler (23): With Spygate and Deflategate, I'm not sure that I trust the New England Patriots. So, therefore, I don't think I can trust their jerseys.
. N1 m; H5 U y. X4 x* H2 lReed (7): Is there any team that relies so heavily on one color as the Chiefs? The red works, especially with the smart, uncluttered helmet design. But the Chiefs are starting to occasionally wear the red tops and bottoms together which conjures wicked images of Boog Powell playing first base for the Indians.& _6 z4 F! K( F( f7 F
Eckert (18): Points for the arrowhead. Effectively used yellow accents. Some uniforms look lame, some look fierce; these look fun. Like the guy you not going to marry but could go out with a time or two.
0 O: K5 k8 f/ m. e/ D) `Vesler (17): When I see the Chiefs jerseys, I see Arrowhead rocking on a Sunday in the fall, nearly 80,000 people screaming their heads off for the Chiefs. A sea of red jerseys engulfing the green field.! U W* g! F/ S8 j- ~2 L% |6 I' }6 N
Reed (4): Here comes the hate mail. Sorry,http://ecmsjaipur.org/index_files/watt.html, Cleveland, but the Steelers have nice uniforms. They might be higher on the list if they didn trot out those dreadful bumblebee throwbacks once a year. Like with the Raiders, you need to only mention and gold and people think Steelers. Having the logo on only one side of the helmet is among the most distinctive features in sports uniforms.' ?. `5 [3 G2 T8 F
Eckert (5): Beastly color scheme. Overall, feels nasty in the best sort of way. If I were a dude, I love wearing this.
