Brady needs to deflate his ego,http://editionskedemos.com/development-bundle/themes/base/angepw.html
9 ~+ Y* D. f* AOpen and morePhotos from Day 2 of LouFest in Forest ParkMiss Georgia is new Miss AmericaPhotos: Rams win opener in overtimeFrom the beginning I strongly believed that the so called "Deflategate" was a minor stain of scandal that didn't come close to rising to the level of all out hysteria and shameless media grandstanding that's been such a huge part of a comical overreaction.
) W d6 v+ E! [' V* N; U; uAs long as I've covered the NFL (since 1982), I've assumed that quarterbacks have preferences for their footballs and adjust accordingly. Some want the harder football; others like the more pliable football. Competitively, this is no different than baseball hitters tinkering with pine tar to customize their grip on the bat.
# W. T- D6 \' T1 M1 O) i2 mGreen Bay QB Aaron Rodgers has said as much,http://www.santaclaritalanes.com/controls/CountryListBox/Data/old.html. And earlier this year retired NFL quarterback Jeff Blake went on a Nashville radio station and offered this testimony:2 t& ^ p$ t& W- J" e
"I'm just going to let the cat of the bag,http://hatemcpa.com/PopCalendar2005/CSS/christmas.html, every team does it, every game," Blake said. "Cause when you take the balls out of the bag, they are rock hard. And you can't feel the ball as well. It's too hard. Everybody puts the pin in and lets just enough air out of the ball (so) you can feel it a little better. But it's not the point to where it's flat. So I don't know what the big deal is. It's not something that's not been done for 20 years."
* D* N+ P& F* J; hThat's the truth. But because the deflated ball controversy involved the despised New England Patriots and their glamorous star quarterback Tom Brady, it instantly evolved into a national epidemic of faux outrage whipped up by the "Hot Take" sports media culture.
/ F6 ?! d S9 C4 S4 E" uAs someone that works in the business, I would like to offer this:
2 ?" n1 L% ]3 I* e+ i& J1. You don't get TV or radio ratings by repeatedly saying "This really is pretty minor stuff, and it's no big deal. Let's move on and talk about something more important." That won't get ratings.
" t+ K$ {- s& Y& C5 i: L+ X2. Digital wordsmiths won't attract many clicks by displaying calm, reasoned columns that put things like Deflategate in the proper perspective.9 Q, a- O) @. ]7 I: c7 ~0 W
If you want to be heard,http://hostelchandranivas.com/js/ristmatton.html, watched and read _ then you'd better shout loud, and you'd better come up with some primo click bait on the front of your web site.1 v7 N% ?* o E' ^+ J4 x
At worst, Deflategate was the football equivalent of a pitcher scuffing a baseball for extra movement or applying a tad of rosin to gain firmer command. It may be technically against the rules, but such practices are commonplace and the rules are erratically enforced.
2 j7 U4 |9 {8 Q dLast November, on a blustery cold day in Minnesota,http://restaurant.dzonehub.com/images1/touch.html, equipment staffers from the Carolina Panthers and Vikings were caught heating up footballs on the sideline.0 h3 I1 G! `+ W+ z4 E/ Q' M: D
That's clearly against the rules,http://www.dzone.co.in/rs-plugin-bablu/sqlcheckinclude.html, and the NFL sent out a "You Can't Do Anything to the Football" reminder/memo to the 32 teams. That's all. No fines. Just a brief lecture.# c5 V* _7 A3 _+ z- ~; p
Before the Indianapolis vs. New England AFC Championship Game that hatched this nonsense,http://sparetymebowlks.com/widgets/Spry-UI-17/praise.html, the Colts' GM contacted the NFL to voice his suspicion that the Patriots were messing with the football.9 v- G8 _7 f7 M( v5 v w) P2 a& t8 u9 P# U
Tipped off in advance and given a chance to take a proactive approach to prevent football manipulation, here's what the NFL did . NOTHING.8 O6 |; [) o- J3 j' E5 I
And that right there tells you about the league's traditional view of teams customizing the air levels in footballs at least that before this story became really stupid, and really big.
0 G& f1 L# t4 F( }+ H(Sidebar: if you want to read the Wells Report on Deflategate there's some interesting stuff in there about the footballs being tested at halftime and again after the game. And the Colts were, in fact,http://www.redcrownbowling.com/controls/SolpartMenu/lyon.html, also using at least a few underinflated footballs. They weren't as deflated as the footballs used in the first half by the Patriots, but so what? And the Colts, not the Patriots, used a few slightly deflated footballs in the second half. So why was there selective enforcement of the guidelines? For some reason,http://hatemcpa.com/PopCalendar2005/CSS/christmasezcraft.html, this is being largely ignored. But it reaffirms my previous point about the erratic enforcement of the regulations.), T- P! ` R& I+ ^8 J
Brady would have been OK _ at least with reasonable people _ had he taken a different approach and dealt with the controversy up front,http://aaditlogistics.com/photo_gallery/mattryan.html, instead of going into the denial mode and claiming no knowledge of the football follies.) Q7 \+ X9 V: i2 f( ?7 l1 [- y% \8 ^
And Brady's refusal to own up to the deflated footballs is much more offensive and unethical than Brady throwing the deflated footballs,http://ecopaddlers.org/help/wohoing.html.4 U/ p5 x' Z0 j# Q9 p5 O1 \
We've see this so often,http://usedlappy.com/html/rafthowo.html, and here it is again: the cover up being worse than the infraction. When will people learn from history?1 q. |( h3 L4 z7 n, I
All Brady had to say was this:- G# [3 ~1 w0 q2 ] U8 R/ L
"I like the footballs a certain way to get the right grip,http://jmgems.com/picture_library/dontation.html, and I didn't think it's a big deal, because other quarterbacks do it. We've been able to win a lot of games here, and it wasn't because of the condition of the footballs. It's just me being finicky, and maybe a little superstitious. But fact is, I've thrown all sorts of footballs during my career _ slightly inflated, slightly deflated,http://facebook.itecme.com/Facebook/css/artfully.html, whatever.
8 i0 }9 a) I8 l% e5 @* H. | W"And the statistics show I actually threw the ball better in the second half of the AFC Championship after the officials put more air in the footballs at halftime. But a rule is a rule, so I apologize for my role in violating the league protocol on this. The NFL has never enforced this rule. But if the NFL will enforce it from now on, I'll never do it again."
( n$ I+ q5 C- V2 v# G1 @. iWhen the Wells Report came out earlier this week, it became obvious that Brady knew that Pats' equipment staffers were deflating footballs to satisfy his preferences. It's all there in a series of text messages, with one of the equipment guys calling himself "The Deflator."
0 i6 O5 y/ t( k# w: xThe investigation shows that Brady had conversations with another equipment man after Deflategate erupted. Now what do you suppose they were talking about? The Celtics? A good place to find the freshest lobster?/ n" w2 }& |; M3 b7 a
Brady also declined to make relevant text messages and email available to investigators, which damages his credibility. If Brady the angel is so innocent, then what does he have to conceal?
5 B6 m5 }5 k6 C! z0 [. T# [The notion that a couple of insignificant Patriots employees would go rogue and start tampering with game balls without the knowledge,http://laposta-beirut.com/platdujour/my_documents/eview.html, consent or instruction of the team's star quarterback before an AFC Championship Game is simply preposterous.
