Akron, OH - The Rubber Division will be offering several educational courses during the upcoming meeting in Cincinnati, OH. Introduction to Compounding and Testing of Elastomers will be held on Monday, October 8, from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. with instructor William Stahl of Rainbow Mastermixing. This seminar will present an overview of compounding elastomers. Topics will include elastomers, fillers, oils/plasticizers and curing agents. Also discussed will be the mixing and testing of elastomer compounds and how to select an elastomer for a given application. Silicone Basics will be conducted on Tuesday, October 9, from 8:00 a.m. until noon with instructor Dr. Ragin Amrutiya of SilMix - California. This course will cover silicone characteristics and benefits, different types (focusing on primarily VMQ, not fluoro or phenyl), how it is made, why it is different than other materials, curing, silica powders, additives for different properties and applications, and HCR processing, plus LSR differences – properties and processing. Introduction to Dispersions will be held on Tuesday, October 9, from 1:00 until 5:00 p.m. Steven Monthey of Rhein Chemie and Tim Miller of Akrochem are the instructors. This course will start with a detailed explanation on how dispersion is accomplished in rubber, including both liquids and solids. Next, each type of dispersion will be studied, including the common carriers and their capabilities. When discussing the polymer bound dispersion, several polymer types and combinations will be examined. Finally, each type of dispersion will be explored as to their benefits and limitations. Rubber Bonding - Intro to Application will be conducted on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 9-10, from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Instructors will be R.J. Del Vecchio, a consultant, and Brian Stull and Mason Myers of Lord Corp. Instruction will include the bonding of rubber compounds to solid substrates (metals, plastics, etc.) and the chemistry, mechanics and overall methods for achieving and evaluating such bonds. Participants will progress through learning the theories of bonding to detailed discussions of actual factory practices for consistent, durable bonds. Cure Chemistry for Rubber will be held on Wednesday, October 10, from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. with instructor Steven Monthey of Rhein Chemie. This course will be a comprehensive review on the chemistry of rubber curing. It will include sulfur curing, along with the majority of the common and not so common curative types. Next will be a section on sulfur donors and their effect on the curing chemistry. Then peroxide curing will be covered, including the common available peroxides with their advantages and disadvantages, along with a short section on co-agents. Finally, there will be sections on unconventional cure systems, including resin cures and other unique cure chemistries. Protecting Your Intellectual Property When the Wolf is At the Door (And the Wolf is Always at the Door!) will be held on Thursday, October 11, from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. with instructor David L. Suter of Intellectual Property Counsel, Harness, Dickey & Pierce. He will cover documenting your ideas; what to document; why document; how to document; how long to keep documentation; what not to document; patent vs. trade secret – what’s the difference; and protecting technology from off-shore misappropriation. -
